Mineral Exploration Drilling in NSW
NSW Drilling History
Exploration drilling in NSW dates back to the 1800s when gold was first discovered in Bathurst, in the Central West. This led to a massive influx of miners and prospectors who used picks and shovels to find and extract gold from the ground.
Since then, advances in drilling technology have made mineral exploration drilling more efficient and productive. The development of air-powered drills and diamond drilling techniques has allowed miners to drill much deeper into the earth and extract a wider range of minerals.
In the mid-20th century, the focus of exploration drilling in NSW shifted from gold to other minerals, such as coal, copper, lead, zinc, and silver. The discovery of large coal deposits in Singleton and the Hunter Valley region led to the establishment of a number of coal mines and associated exploration drilling operations.
Today, the exploration drilling industry in NSW plays a vital role in the state’s economy. It provides a large number of jobs and contributes to the development of various sectors, including mining, oil and gas, construction, and environmental management.

Future of the NSW Drilling Industry
Even though mining in New South Wales has been around for almost 200 years, regional NSW is still extremely rich in untapped minerals and resources. There is huge potential for future discoveries in NSW to create new jobs and deliver economic benefits to the state, including regional and rural communities.
The NSW Government understands the significant role the drilling industry will play in the coming decades, especially as there is a growing demand globally for minerals and metals needed for the development of new-generation technologies.
In 2022, the NSW Government announced $1.5 million of funding for round 5 of an exploration drilling grants program, New Frontiers Exploration Program. This program supports explorers to search for deposits of metallic minerals in NSW, including critical minerals and high-tech metals. It’s one of the many ways the government is promoting mineral exploration investment in NSW.
It’s clear that exploration drilling will play a significant role in the next few decades. Resolution Drilling is an independent drilling company based in Parkes NSW. With drilling operations across the state. Resolution Drilling is at the forefront of this exciting industry and will continue to help Australian mining companies explore and uncover the valuable, untapped resources of this great state.
