Mineral Exploration Drilling in QLD
Queensland Drilling History
Queensland has a rich history of mining that dates back to the early 1800s. The discovery of gold in Gympie in 1867 (170km north of Brisbane) led to a huge increase in mining activity and the establishment of various mining towns in the region.
During the late 19th century, copper and silver were also discovered in Queensland, leading to the establishment of several mines in Mount Isa and Cloncurry. The establishment of Mount Isa Mines in 1923 marked the beginning of large-scale mining operations in the state.
In the mid-20th century, coal became the dominant mineral in Queensland’s mining industry, with large deposits discovered in the Bowen Basin and the Surat Basin. The discovery of coking coal in the Bowen Basin led to the establishment of several coal mines, which were crucial to the growth of Queensland’s economy.
The state’s mining industry has also contributed to the development of other sectors, such as construction and infrastructure. The construction of the Mount Isa to Townsville railway line in the early 1900s, for example, was driven by the need to transport minerals from the Mount Isa Mines to the coast.
Today, Queensland’s mining industry remains a crucial part of the state’s economy, employing thousands of people and contributing significantly to the export earnings of the country. The industry focuses on a range of minerals, including coal, bauxite, copper, lead, zinc, and gold, and continues to drive economic growth and development in the region.

Future of the QLD Drilling Industry
Queensland’s mining industry has established itself as a cornerstone of the state’s economy. However, the story is far from over. QLD still has abundant reserves of coal, metals, minerals, and critical resources essential for powering the world’s technological advancements and energy needs. As the global demand for these resources continues to grow, Queensland is well-positioned to take advantage of this.
The Queensland state government is well aware of the importance of mineral exploration to the economy and job creation and is committed to fostering further exploration and development. The government promotes a number of exploration grants, incentivising the search for critical minerals and high-tech metals. Under the Queensland Resources Industry Development Plan (QRIDP), $17.5 million in funding is available until June 2027 to support Queensland mineral exploration companies. The QLD government is also continuously investing in geological surveys, research, and infrastructure development. Combine this with the state’s geological diversity, from the mineral-rich regions of Mount Isa to the coalfields of the Bowen Basin, and you can see there are ample opportunities for discovery and development.
The future of Queensland’s mining industry shines brightly. With its abundant mineral wealth, and dedication to exploration, the state will play an important role in meeting the world’s increasing demand for minerals and metals. Resolution Drilling are proud to be at the forefront of this growing industry. We are excited to continue to help Australian mining companies explore and uncover the hidden treasures of this great state.
